Intellectual property, engine of growth and development

A quantification of its economic and social impacts in Mexico

The notion of economic development is dynamic in many ways, not only by the way it is measured, but also in the way we are able to identify its causes. As countries develop, it has been observed that they grow increasingly dependent on intangible assets and while being less so on the extraction of raw materials or manufactures.

For this reason, intellectual property, composed by copyrights and industrial property, as a means of protecting such intangible assets, becomes important. This study is oriented towards analyzing the importance of innovation and its stimulation through intellectual property; a necessary instrument for the development of national economies and companies alike. First, industrial property-based industries are identified and defined, to then assess their current situation in Mexico. In addition, the document explains how innovation has had diverse and very positive effects on business cycles.

In the same sense, an assessment of various international experiences in the field of intellectual property is made. The value of industrial property in Mexico is then quantified in economic terms as Gross Domestic Product and investment in addition to its social contribution. Finally, the document proposes an index to measure the protection of industrial property in Mexico at various moments in time and even by each state of the Republic; in addition, the document suggests some areas of improvement on the application of Intellectual Property in Mexico.
