Concentration in mobile telecommunications in Latin America

The lack of competition in telecommunications, associated with excessive market concentration, often results in pernicious effects for both consumers and operators (others than the one that holds most of the market). There lies the importance of quantifying and analyzing such concentration within the mobile telecommunications sector, thus contributing to the design and implementation of regulatory mechanisms to deal with it.

In this subject, measured by the Herfindahl-Hirschman index, it is possible to identify Latin America as a highly concentrated region, with little progress in the efforts to mitigate this scenario and where the presence of some groups with a regional footprint seems to contribute to this reality.
